Skills for Life

Good literacy skills, comprising writing, reading and communication, are vital in today's workplace. The care sector is no exception.
Writing skills are necessary in documentation such as reports, communication books and care plans. Reading comprehension skills are important for understanding the wealth of policies and procedures that staff have to deal with. Effective communication skills are useful for developing positive working relationships with service users and other staff members.

Work in the care sector creates specific numeracy demands too. These include: being responsible for someone else's money, ensuring medication is administered in the correct dose, diluting cleaning products to the right ratio to avoid chemical burns, supporting individuals during cooking, and ensuring appointments are met on time.
Time-sheets may need to be completed to ensure that correct payments are made for the hours worked

Interactive Development can provide the training and support to develop these skills. We can deliver literacy and numeracy by embedding the literacy or numeracy core curriculum into sector-specific training, i.e. person centred planning or safe handling of medication training, or by delivering the straight forward two-day literacy course which will culminate in taking The National Literacy Test, a quick and accessible way of gaining a nationally-recognised literacy qualification, equivalent to GCSE standards. We will also be able to provide the same type of course and qualification route for numeracy. Raising and formalising workforce litearcy and numeracy standard can only benefit companies; enabling the provision of a better quality of service, as well as giving individual learners enhanced confidence in their own abilities.
