Epilepsy Awareness
Overview
This course is aimed at care workers who are involved with clients who suffer from seizures of an epileptic.
Outline of Programme
On completion of the course, delegates will understand:
- The main effects of epilepsy as experienced by the service users groups
- The importance of supporting service users to take medication as directed by their doctor
- That service users may have unpredictable moods and behaviours from epilepsy
The syllabus includes:
- What Epilepsy is and how it is caused.
- How to recognise at least three types of seizure and how they present
- Know how to safely care for someone having a seizure
- Know how to administer emergency rectal diazepam and be assessed as safe to do so
- What documentation is required following a seizure
Assessment:
The course is delivered in 2 hours and Candidates must demonstrate a willingness to learn along with interaction of group activities.

Epilepsy Awareness & Seizure Management - Full Day
Duration: 6 hours
Delegates: Those who work with or have contact with Adults.

- Status epilepticus
- When to call an ambulance
- Triggers and precipitants
- Need to know points
- Observing and recording
- Epilepsy and mortality
- Anti-epileptic drug therapy
- Other treatments / complementary therapies
- Psychosocial workshop including group specific scenarios
- Safety in the home and leisure
- Discussion and evaluations
Learning Outcomes:
- Students will gain understanding of and confidence in the management of different seizure types
- Students will appreciate the importance of accurate recording of seizures and good communication with relevant others
- Have a greater understanding of risk assessment, and assimilate this information to their individual environment and service user group
- All will be able to recognise the emergency situation and act as appropriate
- Training will facilitate best practice guidelines and ensure that all will have the practical skills and knowledge to provide a safe, effective environment for people with epilepsy
- Students will enhance their understanding of the psychosocial impact of epilepsy upon the individual and their families thus promoting a more holistic approach and opportunity to offer greater support
